Hi, I wanted to make sure this is legal before I take part in it. So a friend of mine who I have known now for about 15 years wants to get rid of his car because he can no longer afford it. He has about 8k left to pay on the loan for it, and hasn't driven it in about a month because he let the insurance lapse. To get the car off of his hands, he is offering it to me for free, i'll just take over the loan. Here's the thing...my credit is currently rebuilding and I know his bank will probably deny me during the application process. So, I was told by a family friend, that in this case...as long as he has the title in his name (which he does, no liens)...he can sign over the title to me, and i can then insure the car in my name. And, i'll just make his current payments for him for the loan (which is still in his name) until it's paid off.....this is legal, correct? I just want to make sure before taking part. Does the loan, title, and insurance HAVE to be in his name? OR does the bank just want to get paid back regardless of who is paying?....thanks for all your answers.
